Ground-shaking scenarios and urban risk evaluation of Barcelona using the Risk-UE capacity spectrum based method

Abstract: The Capacity Spectrum Based Method developed in the framework of the European project Risk-UE has been applied to evaluate the seismic risk for the city of Barcelona, Spain. Accordingly, four damage states are defined for the buildings, the action is expressed in terms of spectral values and the seismic quality of the buildings, that is, their vulnerability, is evaluated by means of capacity spectra. The probabilities of the damage states are obtained considering a lognormal probability distribution. The most … Show more

“…Data for buildings were provided by the City Council's Municipal Institute of Information Technology (IMI). In previous seismic risk studies in Barcelona [5][6][7][8], buildings were grouped into three classes: low-, mid-and high-rise, called RCL, RCM and RCH, with 1 to 3, 4 to 6 and over 6 stories, respectively. Notably, most of the buildings in this district range from 6 to 11 stories, because buildings with 5 or fewer stories in Barcelona are mainly made from unreinforced masonry.…”

“…In addition, there are several methodologies for calculating seismic vulnerability that consider hazard and exposure in different ways. For instance, vulnerability-index-based methods (VIM) [6,7] and capacity spectrum-based methods (CSM) [8] are the most used to estimate seismic vulnerability in urban environments, from a probabilistic perspective. Borzi et al [9] developed models to quantify seismic vulnerabilities by considering uncertainties for reinforced concrete structures.…”

“…Asimismo, se debería evaluar la vulnerabilidad de todos los edificios del distrito del Eixample incluidos en procesos y planes de rehabilitación, especialmente los protegidos, aplicando métodos más avanzados y precisos (como, por ejemplo, el método basado en el espectro de capacidad [14,25]). …”
