“…Afterwards, participants read the GRC vignettes (one GRC vignette per participant) with the instruction of reading as slow as possible (corresponding to the pseudo-condition of slow reading as they were initially informed), while they were also told that these scripts were excerpts from true interviews. More importantly for our purposes, participants were emphatically instructed to imagine themselves in the position of the hero of the vignette, visualize their own possible reactions, thoughts, and emotional experiences to the actions of other actors in the vignette (Skeens, 2017). The previous instruction to read slowly was expected to allow for the full expression of the relevant imagery.…”

“…Carpenter et al's integrative review of the effectiveness of guided imagery for pain management in postoperative patients found that it may be an effective tool for reducing pain in postoperative orthopaedic patients (Carpenter et al, 2017). An integrative review by Skeens showed that guided imagery can be used in children and adults to create feelings of empowerment and relaxation; increase endorphins; and decrease anxiety, pain, blood loss, and the use of pain medications (Skeens, 2017). By refocusing the mind, guided imagery affects the limbic system, facilitating physiological relaxation by lowering the sympathetic responses and increasing the parasympathetic nervous system responses.…”
