Haematological and Blood Biochemical Changes in the Fresh Water Fish, Notopterus notopterus (Pallas) Exposed to Acidic Medium

Abstract: Abstract. The present study was carried out to find out the changes induced by one of the stress conditions such as acidic medium exposure on some haematological and blood biochemical, parameters in the fresh water fish, Notopterus notopterus. Increase in the haemoglobin and haematocrite indicate haemoconcentration in the fish blood. Glucose, alkaline phosphatase, sodium and calcium, protein, BUN, creatinine, triglycerides, enzymes such as SGOT and SGPT were decreased in the fish N.notopterus exposed to acidic… Show more

“…In this study, the BUN and creatinine values were 5 mg/dL and 0.39–0.40 mg/dL, respectively. Other studies show somewhat similar results, for example Clarias gariepinus with 0.00–6.30 mg/dL and 0.00–2.90 mg/dL 52 , Gymnothorax vicinus with < 11 and 26–31 mg/dL 62 , Notopterus notopterus with the values of 2.20 and 0.69 mg/dL 63 .…”

“…Triglycerides, responsible for providing the energy and nutrient needs of the cells, are known deposits of fat in the body (Kulkarni and Barad, 2015). In this study, there was a statistically significant decrease in the triglyceride ratio of the T3 group.…”

“…damage to the liver or kidney tissues. Since the differences among the treatments were not significant, we can assume that none of the aforementioned happened and that the fish probably did not have enough nutrients in some of the feeding frequencies which could trigger a transamination reaction as seen in extremely starved fish (Kulkarni and Barad, 2015).…”
