Haplotypes of ‘Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum’ identified in Umbeliferous crops in Spain

Abstract: Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum' is a phloem-limited Gram-negative bacterium that causes serious damage to different crops of the botanical families Solanaceae and Apiaceae. Five haplotypes have been described: LsoA and LsoB are present in solanaceous crops in America and vectored by the tomato/potato psyllid Bactericera cockerelli; LsoC affects carrots from Northern and Central Europe, and is transmitted by the carrot psyllid Trioza apicalis; haplotypes LsoD and LsoE are present in Southern Europe and Mo… Show more

“…After the first discovery in Finland, CLso was subsequently found in symptomatic carrots in Sweden (Munyaneza et al 2012b), Norway (Munyaneza et al 2012c), Spain (Alfaro-Fernández et al 2012), France (Loiseau et al 2014), and Germany (Munyaneza et al 2015). In Spain CLso was also detected in symptomatic celery, parsnip and parsley (Alfaro-Fernández et al 2017;Teresani et al 2014). In France, CLso was recently detected in the apiaceous crops celery, chervil, fennel, parsley and parsnip, in addition to carrot, and the infected carrot, celery, parsley and chervil plants had severe symptoms (Hajri et al 2017).…”

“…For Lso, few studies have been attempted to investigate its population structure and genetic diversity, in particular due to its fastidious nature (Lin and Gudmestad, 2013). Sequencing of the 16S rRNA, 16S/23S ISR and 50S rpIJ - rpIL ribosomal gene loci has become the method of choice for the study of the genetic diversity of the bacterium (Lin et al, 2009; Wen et al, 2009; Nelson et al, 2011, 2013; Teresani et al, 2014; Alfaro-Fernández et al, 2017; Haapalainen et al, 2017; Hajri et al, 2017; Monger and Jeffries, 2018). However, genetic variation within these genes does not generally allow differentiation of closely related strains due to their high degree of conservation (Lin and Gudmestad, 2013).…”
