Health-related quality of life trajectories of methamphetamine-dependent individuals as a function of treatment completion and continued care over a 1-year period

Abstract: This study applies a chronic illness framework to evaluate treatment outcomes among individuals dependent on methamphetamine (MA). Using growth curve modeling, health-related quality of life (HRQOL) trajectories of MA-dependent individuals (N = 723) were examined over a 1-year period. Results show greater improvements in mental HRQOL trajectories as a function of treatment completion and continued care, although fairly static trajectories in physical health status. Other factors affecting HRQOL trajectories in… Show more

“…This work shows that methamphetamine users who utilise drug treatment exhibit extensive polysubstance use (Gonzales et al, 2009), a high prevalence of mental health issues (McKetin et al, 2011), and low socioeconomic status . However, there is less research comparing methamphetamine users who access treatment to those who do not.…”

“…Most research of service access by methamphetamine users has focused on treatment outcomes from individuals sampled at the point of specialist drug treatment entry or during treatment episodes (e.g., Brecht, Greenwell, & Anglin, 2005;Gonzales et al, 2009;Huber et al, 1997;McKetin, Kelly, & Indig, 2005;McKetin, Lubman, Lee, Ross, & Slade, 2011). “…The problem of MA abuse is not limited to the USA, since significant use is also reported in Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia (Degenhardt et al 2010). The abuse of MA is particularly high among men who have sex with men (MSM; Gonzales et al 2009). In this group, MA use is associated with an increase in high-risk sexual activities such as decreased condom use and increased numbers of sexual partners (Gonzales et al 2010; Shoptaw and Reback 2007).…”
