HearCARE: Hearing and Communication Assistance for Resident Engagement

Abstract: Impaired hearing is related to poor health outcomes, including compromised cognitive function, in aging individuals. Hearing loss is the third most common chronic health condition after arthritis and heart disease in older adults and the fourth most detrimental condition related to quality of life in older adults. Only 18% of aging adults who have impactful hearing loss actually use custom-fit amplification. Therefore, the majority of aging individuals entering senior living facilities will have untreated hear… Show more

“…The coexistence of hearing loss in patients living with dementia could cause adverse patientrelated outcomes due to difficulties in participating in daily social activities and to breakdowns in communication between patients and caregivers and between patients and professionals. These challenges, in turn, can lead to social exclusion, increase stress and fatigue, and exacerbate neuropsychiatric behaviors, such as apathy, depression, and aggression (Slaughter et al, 2014;Palmer et al, 2017). All of these are related to a lower health-related quality of life.…”

“…Although the results are promising, hearing aid use is rare in the US. Only 18% of older adults with impactful hearing loss actually use custom-fit amplification [ 8 ]. This may be due to cost barriers and low coverage by health insurance and Medicaid, so that hearing aids are only accessible to individuals with a high socioeconomic status [ 36 ].…”

“…Hearing impairment, or hearing loss often occurs with aging and is common among older adults - approximately one-third of people over 65 years of age are affected by disabling hearing loss [ 7 ]. Hearing loss is the third most common chronic condition and the fourth most detrimental condition that affects quality of life in older adults [ 8 ]. Evidence has shown that hearing impairment is more common in patients with dementia than in healthy older adults [ 9 ].…”

“…Despite evidence showing that hearing loss increases the risk of cognitive impairment and that it is somewhat modifiable, in most cases, hearing loss remains untreated. 10,11 It has been shown that older adults with peripheral hearing loss have a 24% higher risk of mild cognitive impairment than those without. 12 The number of older adults with visual and/or hearing loss is growing worldwide, and China, with a rapidly aging population, is no exception.…”
