Heat transfer intensification for retrofitting heat exchanger networks with considering exchanger detailed performances

Abstract: The challenging of this work is to present a thorough study of implementing heat transfer intensification in heat exchanger network (HEN) retrofitting, including all details of exchanger geometry, stream bypassing and splitting, temperature-variation of properties, LMTD and its correction, and pressure drops. This leads to very complex mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problems rarely reported before. By adopting the MILP-based iterative approach proposed in the earlier work (Pan et al., Chem Eng Sci… Show more

“…Nonlinear correlations in the new model include material thermodynamic properties (eqs –), energy balance (eqs –, –), and condensate mixing (eqs and ). Recently, the MILP-based iteration approach has become an attractive method from a computational perspective versus the MINLP approach. This Article proposes a two-stage iteration approach based on MEE operations as shown in Figure . In the inner loop (loop 1), the original model is converted to a new MILP model and solved iteratively to find a feasible solution (simulation) under certain MEE conditions (such as given input black liquor and fresh steam).…”

“…For all the heat exchanges, the temperature approach is assumed as 5 °C to provide sufficient temperature driving force for heat transfer. 44,45 Preheating the two feed reactants mainly affects the reboiler duty of the RD column, and it has negligible effect on the optimal configuration of RDWC. Therefore, HIRDWC configuration can be directly obtained by adding preheaters in the optimal RDWC configuration without further optimization.…”

“…Therefore, in the present study, two heat exchangers were added in the heat-integrated RDWC (HIRDWC) process to preheat the two feed reactants by using the energy of the overhead vapor and product PrAc streams. For all the heat exchanges, the temperature approach is assumed as 5 °C to provide sufficient temperature driving force for heat transfer. , Preheating the two feed reactants mainly affects the reboiler duty of the RD column, and it has negligible effect on the optimal configuration of RDWC. “…These algorithms need parameter tuning that depends on human intervention and does not provide any clear assessments on the solution qualities. Mathematical programming: Most of the mathematical programming approaches in previous literature employed mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) due to the nonlinear nature of thermal constraints [ 23,24 ] and hydraulic equations. [ 25,26 ] …”
