Hepatoprotective activity of Tephrosia purpurea against arsenic induced toxicity in rats

Abstract: Aim:The present study was conducted to evaluate the hepatoprotective activity of Tephrosia purpurea (TP) against sodium arsenite (NaAsO2) induced sub-acute toxicity in rats.Materials and Methods:Twenty four wistar albino rats of either sex were randomly divided into three groups. Group II and III were orally administered with sodium arsenite (10 mg/kg) daily in drinking water for 28 days. Additionally Group III was orally treated with hydro-alcoholic extract of Tephrosia purpurea (TP) @ 500 mg/kg daily for the… Show more

“…As neurological implications of arsenic are known, and many chronic and sub-chronic exposures at a much higher dose as this have already been reported ( Gora et al., 2014 ; Kassab and El-Hennamy, 2017 ); we used this exposure regimen of 11 days to mimic sub-acute exposure which might occur accidentally. Dosing regime was planned to have same endpoints and animals were sacrificed on the 12 th day.…”

“…Increased levels of serum liver enzymes have been confirmed by previous studies. [ 39 ] It was shown in a study that extra virgin OO decreases oxidative stress and plays a hepatoprotective role. [ 40 ] In this study, the above enzymes increased in OO alone.…”

“…The sections of liver in Sa group showed moderate degeneration and necrosis in hepatic parenchyma with mild to moderate fatty change where as control did not reveal any lesions of pathological significance ( Figure 2 ). Earlier, arsenic mediated hepatocytic degeneration was characterized by vacuolar degeneration followed by hepatic necrosis observed in case of rat [ 11 ]. Further, we have observed increased SGPT level in arsenic exposed mice ( Figure 5 ).…”

“…Recently, a series of animal and human epidemiological studies have indicated an association between As exposure and adverse reproductive and developmental outcomes [ 7 – 9 ]. Several line of studies [ 10 , 11 ] have indicated tissue architecture change in heart and hepatic organs by sodium arsenite (Sa). Exposure of Sa showed haemorrhages in myocardium, and degeneration and separation of muscle bundles.…”
