High-Density Molded Cellulose Fibers and Transparent Biocomposites Based on Oriented Holocellulose

Abstract: Ecofriendly materials based on well-preserved and nanostructured wood cellulose fibers are investigated for the purpose of load-bearing applications, where optical transmittance may be advantageous. Wood fibers are subjected to mild delignification, flow orientation, and hot-pressing to form an oriented material of low porosity. The biopolymer composition of the fibers is determined. Their morphology is studied by scanning electron microscopy, cellulose orientation is quantified by X-ray diffraction, and the e… Show more

“…PAA delignification also preserves cellulose fibril structure, cellulose molar mass as well as hemicellulose distribution in the cell wall, avoiding severe chemical degradation. 56 Preserved cellulose molar mass suggests preserved fibril stiffness and strength, while high hemicellulose content prevents cellulose fibril aggregation and largely preserves nanoscale fibril distribution. The removal of lignin is confirmed by the absence of characteristic lignin peaks in the FTIR spectra (Fig.…”

“…This process has been developed and modified but its use in industry was first limited to the manufacturing of egg trays. In the last decade, its interest has grown and more reports can be found on its specificity [8][9][10][11]. The MPP process can vary depending on the destination of the manufactured product.…”
