“…Once pyrogenic PAHs reached the surface waters may have become rapidly associated with particulate matter and sank to the seafloor southeast of the Hercules 265 rig as indicated by the drifter trajectories (Figure ). The strong absorptivity of PAHs to minerals and organic particles [ Radding et al ., ; Luthy et al ., ; Abrajano and Yan , ] has been reported previously to promote sedimentation of spilled oil [ Payne et al ., ; Khelifa et al ., ; Passow et al ., ] and likely with the burnt residues produced during in situ burning of oil slick during the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) spill [ Romero et al ., ].…”

“…The crude oil and refinery compounds released into the environment consists of major polluting compounds of different carbon chain lengths straight n-alkanes, branched (isoalkanes), or cyclic (naphthenes) arrangement up to 60 carbons and aromatic hydrocarbons (Abrajano and Yan 2014). United States National Research Council classified these organic contaminants into high and low molecular weight hydrocarbons, oxygenated, halogenated aliphatics, aromatics, nitro aromatics hydrocarbons and alkanes (NRC 2000;Abrajano and Yan 2014). These hydrocarbons and alkanes have been considered as priority pollutants (NRC 2000;Ekperusi and Aigbodion 2015), which are biohazards and biomagnified in the environment (Kramer and Van der Heijden 1990;Mohamed et al 2006).…”

“…According to Abrajano et al [29], petrogenic sources are derived from petroleum, such as natural oil seepage and oil spills while pyrogenic sources are derived from the combustion of petroleum, automobile tire, and wood and vehicle emission. PAHs may then be transported from their points of release to the coastal environment via surface runoff and atmospheric deposition.…”
