Histologic and Biomechanical Evaluation of 2 Resorbable-Blasting Media Implant Surfaces at Early Implantation Times

Abstract: This study evaluated 3 implant surfaces in a dog model: (1) resorbable-blasting media + acid-etched (RBMa), alumina-blasting + acid-etching (AB/AE), and AB/AE + RBMa (hybrid). All of the surfaces were minimally rough, and Ca and P were present for the RBMa and hybrid surfaces. Following 2 weeks in vivo, no significant differences were observed for torque, bone-to-implant contact, and bone-area fraction occupied measurements. Newly formed woven bone was observed in proximity with all surfaces.

“…Of all tested implants 63 were not osseointegrated and therefore could not be analyzed. All 40 studies 44,57‐95 used titanium implants, two studies further applied zirconia implants 70,76 . In 32 studies the implant design was screw‐shaped, seven studies used cylinder‐shaped implants, only one study used screw‐shaped and cylinder‐shaped implants 67 .…”

“…The literature search resulted in a total number of 4,174 titles of which 2,815 titles remained after automatic deduplication. Two thousand seven hundred and seventy five studies were excluded, the remaining 40 studies 44 , 57 , 58 , 59 , 60 , 61 , 62 , 63 , 64 , 65 , 66 , 67 , 68 , 69 , 70 , 71 , 72 , 73 , 74 , 75 , 76 , 77 , 78 , 79 , 80 , 81 , 82 , 83 , 84 , 85 , 86 , 87 , 88 , 89 , 90 , 91 , 92 , 93 , 94 , 95 were included in this systematic review. The main cause for exclusion was the application of different surface modifications, for example, the lack of an inorganic test surface (731).…”

“…Marin et al . ( 40 ) evaluated Sa for an AB/AE, RBM/acid etched (RBMa) and a hybrid implant (AB/AE + RBMa). AB/AE implants showed higher Sa when compared to others, with the hybrid device reaching an intermediate value.…”

“…Since the discovery of osseointegration, different models of implants have been developed. Modifications occurred in both shape and surface, with the evolution of smooth machined to microscopically rough surfaces, which enhance bone healing around implants (4,17).…”

“…The contact between bone and endosseous implant is established and maintained after installation by the osseointegration process, in which the main element of the whole system is the implant itself, considering its macroscopic and microscopic characteristics (1)(2)(3). Morphological and chemical surface changes may alter the response of the bone tissue adjacent to the screw by inducing specific responses in the osteoblastic cells (4).…”
