Histopathological features of juvenile‐onset laryngeal papillomatosis related to severity

Abstract: Background Laryngeal papillomatosis (LP) is a disease that presents in both juvenile (JLP) and adult patients (ALP). This study correlated papillomatosis characteristics with the Derkay score. Methods Retrospective data and biopsies of 36 patients with JLP and 56 with ALP were collected and separated into groups according to their scores. Results The mean of the Derkay score, in the JLP group was 10.97 and in Group ALP was 8.26. The JLP group presented a more aggressive result than in the adult group (P = .02)… Show more

“…Furthermore, similar to others studies, HPV 11 was significantly associated with a higher severity of the disease in both groups . In fact, the severity of the disease was shown to be strongly associated with age, mainly in affected children under 5 years old . Our study showed the association between higher Derkay scores and HPV 11 infection in juvenile patients, especially when the vocal cords and subglottis sites were affected.…”

“…ARRP affects mainly male patients in a 4:1 ratio and has a peak incidence in the 4th decade of life. 2,22 The epidemiological findings of the present study were similar to those described previously for both JRRP and ARRP.…”

“…68 On histology, while the degree of dysplasia has not been found to be associated with more severe disease, the presence of atypical mitoses and mitoses above the basal cell layer of the epithelium have been found to be associated with more severe disease. 69 A maternal history of condyloma acuminata may be associated with aggressive RRP. 7,21,35 Management There is no cure and treatment consists of repeated microlaryngoscopic procedures to remove the papillomas until the patient goes into remission.…”

“…Although many studies have focused on clinical severity risk factors, the only one identified to date is the early age of onset of the disease (34,35). To our knowledge only one article investigated in JoRRP histological criteria related to disease severity (such as the presence of mitosis above the basal cell layer) but without significant results (36). Several studies have looked for histological criteria with the help of immunohistochemistry.…”
