History of structural analysis & dynamics of Wärtsilä medium speed engines

Abstract: This paper opens up the history of structural analysis and dynamics simulations of Wärtsilä engines. It cites already published articles and theses with some backgrounds information. It also discusses some of the backgrounds of the in-house tool development. Additionally, this paper presents the development of the computers and investment of the simulation capacity in order to understand how it has been the enabler of ever more complicated models. It lists the work done during fifty decades. The authors sincer… Show more

“…One of the biggest efforts has been the way of bringing the assembly loads, but, of course, the main thing has been this fretting research that already started fifteen years ago. Frondelius et al [70] give a nice review into the history of the numerical simulations in Wärtsilä.…”

“…Frondelius et al present a comprehensive literature review of medium-speed engine development [1]. The crankshaft is the heart of the engine and this study focuses on impactexcited vibration behavior in this component.…”

“…An optimization routine was applied to avoid possible resonance caused by the vibration. For example, in the high pressure fuel lines of reciprocating medium speed diesel engines and pumps, rotation excitations create undesirable mechanical vibration that is often the main trigger to cause damage to the system [1]. To avoid the need of fixing these issues on the field and to increase reliability, a simulation driven mindset was applied.…”
