HLA associations in otosclerosis in Japanese patients

Abstract: Otosclerosis is a disease of the otic capsule that is caused by abnormal resorption and redeposition of bony tissue. Sixty-two unrelated Japanese patients exhibiting clinical otosclerosis were typed for HLA-A, -B, -C antigens. Twenty-one of the patients were also typed for DR antigens. The frequency of HLA-Aw33 was significantly higher in otosclerosis patients than in the control group (24.2% vs 9.5%). This finding suggests that the presence of HLA-Aw33 antigens may be related to an increased susceptibility to… Show more

“…A higher frequency of the Aw33 antigen in patients with otosclerosis compared with control subjects (24.2% versus 9.5%) was observed by Miyazawa et al 61 . In the same year, Bernstein and others 62 demonstrated the relative risk of various haplotypes in 49 patients with otosclerosis.…”

“…HLA antigen frequencies could not be correlated with sex or family history of otosclerosis [19]. Miyazawa et al [20] investigated 62 unrelated Japanese patients with overt clinical otosclerosis. The allele frequency of HLA-Aw33 was significantly higher in otosclerosis patients (24%) than in the control group (9%).…”

“…The HLA system represents the major histocompatibility complex in humans, and is encoded by a complex DNA segment on chromosome 6. Study by Miyazawa et al, in 1996, showed an association between HLA system and otosclerosis whereas in study by Nibu et al, 1990, no association could be determined.…”
