Hodgkin’s lymphoma and its association with EBV and HIV infection

Abstract: Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) constitutes a clonal expansion of what appears to be malignant B cells. Viruses are involved in its pathogenesis, such as the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Since these viral infections have been shown to play key roles in the pathogenesis of HL, countries with a prevalence of HIV and EBV represent interesting population targets to study the pathogenesis of HL, linking the evolution of the disease with viral infections. Usually, patients present with la… Show more

“…Moving away from the clinical implications, it also must be considered that formalin-fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) samples can be stored for longer, therefore ensuring that retrospective studies can be conducted when compared to flow cytometry. Thus, whilst histology remains the recommended tool for accurate diagnosis of lymphoma, flow cytometry does aid in quick assessments, especially when the clinical presentation requires immediate results [32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39][40].…”

“…CD3+/CD4+/CD8− shows a less aggressive type of PTCL-NOS, as compared with CD8 strongly positive PTCL-NOS. An aggressive type of PTCL-NOS is also characterized by positivity for granzyme B [33][34][35][36].…”

“…The diagnosis procedure is complex and is built around the histology of the lymphoma and of the aberrant expression of CD20. Thus, the differential diagnosis for lymphoma was established taking into consideration angioimmunoblastic lymphoma, Lennert’s lymphoma and a peripheral T cell lymphoma, NOS [1113]. The diagnosis of a peripheral T-cell lymphoma, NOS is confirmed by the absence of a more prominent network of vascular structures, with thick hyaline fibers, as well as due to the negative staining of the malignant cells for CD10, corroborated with the paucity of hyperplastic follicular dendritic cells.…”
