Home Network Management Policies: Putting the User in the Loop

Abstract: Abstract-Home networks are becoming increasingly complex but existing management solutions are not simple to use since they are not tailored to the needs of typical home-users. In this paper we present a new approach to home network management that allows users to formulate quite sophisticated "comic-strip" policies using an attractive iPad application. The policies are based on the management wishes of home users elicited in a user study. Comic-strip policies are passed to a Policy engine running on a new Hom… Show more

“…Ethnographic studies, such as [17], show that home network management is universally problematic, and despite recent research efforts [3], [9], [11], [16], [21], there is little in terms of commercial applications that address this interface gap between home networking hardware and its users. Grinter et al [6] notes that despite some technological similarities between a home network and a small, commercial office network, the behaviour of the network's users and their interaction with the computer and networking hardware varies greatly.…”

“…Inter-packet delay measurements in one slice setup Inter-packet delay measurements in three slice setup performance was deemed statistically significant by t-test analysis:• 1 slice versus 2 slices: t = 2.0227, p-value = 0.04311 • 1 slice versus 3 slices: t = 12.4415, p-value <2.2e-16 …”

“…This model is aligned with the network function virtualization (NFV) trend, which proposes that network functions traditionally embedded in specialized hardware are to be implemented by software by using virtualization technologies over commercial off‐the‐shelf servers . Other approaches propose next‐generation RGWs to take advantage of the accurate programmability introduced by the software‐defined networking (SDN) paradigm . The ability of SDN to directly insert detailed traffic flows on the data plane increases the flexibility to handle the residential network traffic .…”

“…Pediaditakis et al [64] y Mortier et al [65] proponen un RGW basado en Linux compuesto por un Open vSwitch (OVS 35 ) controlado por OpenFlow y un controlador NOX. En esta configuración, tanto el plano de datos como el de control están co-ubicados en el mismo dispositivo, proporcionando un RGW basado en SDN "todo en uno".…”
