Hot foam and hot water for weed control: A comparison

Abstract: Thermal weed control plays an important role in managing weeds in synthetic herbicide-free systems, particularly in organic agriculture and in urban areas where synthetic herbicides are prohibited. This study compares the impact on weed control of increased doses of hot water and hot foam (i.e. 0, 0.67, 1.67, 3.33, 5.00, 6.67 and 8.33 kg m–2). The doses were applied using the same machine. The temperatures, weed control effectiveness, weed regrowth after the death of the aboveground vegetative weed tissues, an… Show more

“…In contrast, living and dead mulch methods [14,15] have been practically implemented because of their easy and echo-friendly use. The most basic conventional physical methods include covering the soil surface with a weeding mulch film [16,17] and mowing [18], flaming [18], heating by steam [19], hot water, or hot foam [20], and tilling practices [18].…”

“…However, this practice is not allowed due to a European directive and country legislation that specifically ban the use of herbicides on sports surfaces [22]. As a substitute for chemical desiccation of weeds, several methods relying on heat transfer to plants, referred to as "thermal weeding", have been subject to experimentation by various authors in numerous contexts and play an important role in organic agriculture [23][24][25][26]. Thermal weed control may be performed through several methods [27] whose effects are comparable to non-selective chemical treatments.…”
