How knowledge affects incremental innovation in SMEs: Knowledge base and knowledge heterogeneity

Abstract: While scholars have widely examined the effect of knowledge base (i.e. knowledge breadth (KB) and knowledge depth (KD)) on innovation performance, the relationship between KB/KD and incremental innovations remains not clear. This article examines how existing knowledge base interacts with external and internal knowledge heterogeneity (KH) to affect incremental innovation in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). A collection of 230 samples from high-technology SMEs in China demonstrate that the effects of KB and… Show more

“…This enables them to identify cross-domain knowledge fields and consider possible new connections between knowledge elements which exist in different fields (Xu, 2015), which are of substantial importance in innovating frugally (Dwiedienawati et al, 2021). Furthermore, HKS brings higher chances of novelty (Du, 2021).…”

“…Chesbrough [2] described this as a "paradigm that assumes that firms can and should use external ideas as well as internal ideas, and internal and external paths to market, as the firms look to advance their technology". While the effective execution of an innovative practice by small and medium enterprises (SMEs, hereafter) also needs further research, there is more and more proof that SMEs' innovative activities are successful based on an OI business model [3].…”

“…In particular, a firm's deep knowledge in a specific field can systematically shift the KBB from having a negative effect to having a positive effect. Du ( 2021 ) found that a firm with a broad knowledge base is better able to develop incremental innovations matched with internal knowledge heterogeneity (KH) rather than external KH. Firms with high KBD benefit more from external KH than internal KH for fostering incremental innovations.…”
