How Stable Are Transport-Related Attitudes over Time?

Abstract: The utility of attitudes in travel demand forecasting requires predictability. Any attempt to simulate future attitudes, as is done in such models, would be impractical if they were subject to substantial unpredictable variation over time. We investigate the stability of attitudes using waves of the COVID Future survey answered 3.5-11 months apart. Attitudinal statements have moderate stability while factor-analyzed attitudes demonstrate moderately high stability. This stability is consistent across demographi… Show more

“…There are a limited but growing number of studies focusing on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on individuals’ travel behavior ( Mirtich, 2021 , Salon, 2021 , Capasso da Silva et al, 2021 , Chauhan et al, 2021 ). Bucsky (2020) analyzed the demands for various modes of transport such as public transport, personal vehicle, and bike during the COVID-19 pandemic in Budapest, Hungary.…”

“…Some researchers have found stability to be moderate to low (Thøgersen 2006;Adams et al 2013). However, more recent work suggests that transport-related attitudes are quite stable, similar to other types of attitudes, even over time periods of several months (Mirtich et al 2021). Given that attitudes are generally correlated with transport choices, and transport choices are stable, stability of attitudes would be expected as well.…”

“…The COVID-19 pandemic pushed many non-essential workers to work at home providing the opportunity to explore the revealed preferences of WFH (Beck and Hensher, 2020;Javadinasr et al, 2022;Mohammadi et al, 2022;Salon et al, 2021). As many who were new to WFH started practicing it, the role of attitudes and perceptions have been highlighted after the pandemic literature.…”

“…Another reason is the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our lives. The COVID-19 pandemic forced people to perform essential daily activities such as working and shopping at home (Bhatti et al, 2020;Javadinasr et al, 2022;Mohammadi et al, 2022;Salon et al, 2021). These changes in individuals' daily activities have an impact on many travel behaviors, such as the number of trips per day, destination, mode, and route choice decisions, and thus have an impact on the entire transportation system.…”
