PurposeSocial distancing is an important strategy to control the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, so it is imperative to understand the behavioral impact of social distancing on individuals. This research studied social distancing from a cognitive appraisal of voluntary social distancing compliance (CAVSD) point of view and a non-medical perspective, specifically the psychological impact (PI) of social distancing on the usage intensity of social networking sites (SNS) during the COVID-19 outbreak in India.Design/methodology/approachThe study was conducted on 477 SNS users as a full sample and groups based on age, sex and work status. The model was empirically investigated using structural equation modeling.FindingsCAVSD was negatively associated with PI although it was not a significant predictor, while CAVSD and PI were significant predictors of SNS usage intensity; moreover, SNS usage intensity differed between groups of people.Practical implicationsThese findings are significant for organizations, corporations and educational institutions in both the public and private sectors. There is a need to identify subsections of individuals in need of social support and relief from isolation and loneliness. Individuals are relying on social media to handle social distancing and the pandemic, and this shows up in an increase in social networking activity.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the existing literature by positing social networking as a basic virtual need for socialization, and social media platform assists in that. Cognitive appraisal is an important determinant of individual response.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to understand factors that motivate an individual to seek knowledge on knowledge management systems. Specifically, the work seeks to clarify the impact of organizational practices on an individual’s intention to seek knowledge. The overarching theme is to broaden the current understanding of factors that impact individual knowledge seeking behavior and narrow down factors for which interventions can be developed. Design/methodology/approach In-depth interviews were conducted with the members of knowledge management (KM), human resources (HR) and learning and development teams of Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions Private Limited (RBEI) to understand knowledge behaviors of employees. Subsequent to an exploratory analysis, the survey methodology was used to collect data from members of RBEI. A proposed theoretical model was then validated using partial least squares. Findings Empirical findings suggest that to motivate participation, organizational KM practices need to be geared towards promoting curiosity and engaging learners. Results indicate that overt recognition of knowledge seeking behaviors by HR could be counterproductive. Research limitations/implications This study was limited to an MNC engineering organization in one geographic location; one must be cautious when generalizing these results. Replicating this study in multiple organizations will help mitigate this limitation. Originality/value Little is known on the effect of KM and HR practices on knowledge seeking behaviors. This work addresses this gap and presents a comprehensive model.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to figure out the exact knowledge demand of makers. Furthermore, the paper aims to construct the knowledge space based on makers’ knowledge demand. Design/methodology/approach The first step of this research is to explore the makers’ knowledge demand by the methods of field investigation, non-interventional study and in-depth interviews. On that basis, the elements, principles, framework and mechanism of the knowledge space were discussed. The grounded theory and NVivo software were used in the data analysis. Findings The investigation shows that interest and competition are the main motivations for makers’ knowledge demand. The findings also indicate that the characteristics are active knowledge needs, “informal learning” preferences, divergent thinking, close community ties and interdisciplinary. According to the makers’ knowledge demand node conceptual model, the content of makers’ knowledge demand is principle knowledge, empirical knowledge and knowledge situation. Based on the above findings, the elements, principles, operation framework and inherent operation mechanism of the knowledge space construction are systemically described. Originality/value This study gives precise details about makers’ knowledge demand and the construction of makers’ knowledge space by libraries. This is the first research that comprehensively explores the knowledge demand of makers. The findings can help the library plan and implement the construction of makerspace, and also improve the service for makers.
