Background and purpose: Pre-eclampsia is a major contributing factor of maternal mortality. Dompu District has a high rate of maternal mortality relative to the rest of districts in West Nusa Tenggara Province. Pre-eclampsia is the major cause of maternal mortality in Dompu District. This study aims to examine risk factors of pre-eclampsia among pregnant women.Methods: A case control study was conducted in five public health centres in Dompu District. A total of 104 women who gave birth and have diagnosed with pre-eclampsia during the pregnancy were recruited as cases. A total of 104 women who gave girth and did not have pre-eclampsia were selected as controls. All cases and controls were selected using a systematic random sampling technique from the 2016 pregnant women cohort at five public health centres. Data were collected through interview and extraction from the maternal and child health book. Data were analysed using bivariate and multivariate techniques.Results: Our multivariate analysis found that pre-eclampsia was associated with parity of 1 or >3 (AOR=3.64; 95%CI: 1.85-7.17), body mass index of >27.0 kg/m2 (AOR=3.01; 95%CI: 1.39-6.48), history of chronic diseases (AOR=16.43; 95%CI: 3.32-81.22) and smoke exposure (AOR=3.71; 95%CI: 1.95-7.05).Conclusions: Parity of 1 and >3, BMI of >27.0 kg/m2, history of chronic illnesses and smoke exposure are risk factors for pre-eclampsia in Dompu District, West Nusa Tenggara.

In 2004-2005 the Indonesian Health Demographers Survey found about 20% of the Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) and Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) caused by obesity caused by pre-eclampsia symptoms. A descriptive study has been conducted to determine the level of knowledge of pregnant women about obesity by Tengku Mansyur Hospital Tanjung Balai City in 2021 based on education, parity. This population is all pregnant women who have their pregnancy checked by Tengku Mansyur Hospital Tanjung Balai City in 2021 as many as 33 people and the entire population is based on samples. From the results of research on the level of knowledge of pregnant women about obesity by Tengku Mansyur Hospital, Tanjung Balai City in 2021, the majority of respondents have sufficient knowledge (57.58%) and the minority has less knowledge as much as 14%. Based on the majority age 20-35 years as many as 19 people (57.58%) with sufficient knowledge and broadly aged <20 years 2 people (6.06%) are less knowledgeable. Based on education with high school education as many as 7 people (21.21%) have sufficient knowledge and a minority with elementary education as many as 3 people (9.10%) have sufficient knowledge. And based on parity, the majority had less knowledge in the primigravida group as many as 9 people (27.27%) and the minority with sufficient knowledge in the primigravida group as many as 1 person (3.03%). It is hoped that the role of health workers, especially midwives, is to provide health education and counseling about obesity in pregnant women.

Obesity is one of the factors causing preeclampsia. Based on observational survey data at the Afifa Primary Clinic and Maternity Clinic in Prambon conducted during the month of August 2017, out of 10 pregnant women 1 had severe pre-eclampsia, 1 person had mild preeclampsia, and 1 person with gestational hypertension. The data shows the high incidence of preeclampsia in the Afifa Primary Clinic and Maternity Clinic in Prambon. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of obesity in pregnant women with the incidence of preeclampsia. The research design used was a retrospective analytic survey with chi-square statistical tests using software to determine the relationship. The study population was pregnant women who made a pregnancy visit in the Sidoarjo General Hospital during January-June 2018 totaling 258 mothers. And the sample taken was 157 mothers and was taken by systematic random sampling. The results showed that preeclampsia was more experienced by obese mothers (37.6%) when compared to non-obese mothers (11.1%). While the condition of not preeclampsia is more experienced by mothers who are not obese (88.9%) when compared with mothers who are obese (62.4%). The Chi square test results obtained p value <0.001 which means p <α so that H0 is rejected. It can be concluded that there is a relationship between obesity and the incidence of preeclampsia in pregnancy. So it is recommended to health workers to improve intensive care for obese mothers to reduce the incidence of preeclampsia.
