Human leukocyte antigen (HLA-F) polymorphism is associated with chronic HBV infection

Abstract: Human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-F has been involved in immune regulation of infectious diseases. However, the role of HLA-F polymorphisms in hepatitis B infection outcomes remains unclear. Here, we aimed to determine HLA-F polymorphism implication in chronic HBV. Genotype analysis was performed for three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of HLA-F and one SNP of HLA-E using PCR-SSP, in 252 Tunisian patients with chronic HBV infection stratified according to their HBV DNA levels (140 patients with low HBV DNA… Show more

“…Since the discovery of HLA-F (HLA-5.4) in 1990 by Geraghty and coworkers, only a small amount of evidence for its clinical relevance has been obtained (6, 16). For example, the genetic variants and protein expression of HLA-F have been observed to be associated with different types of diseases, such as cancer (1719), infection (20, 21), reproduction, and autoimmune disorders (2225). Elevated HLA-F expression has been found in cancer lesions and peripheral blood, which was associated with poor survival in cancer patients (19, 26).…”

“…HLA-F is located at the terminal end of chromosome 6, is one of the non-classical HLA class Ib molecules, and is considered as a tolerogenic molecule [16]. HLA-F is a ligand for KIR receptors in natural killer cells (NK cells) and CD8 + T cells.…”

“… 6 9 , 36 , 37 In addition, this choice is in the wake of studies that seek to understand how genetic factors and cells of the innate immune system are involved in cases of virus infection. 38 40 In Burkina Faso, a significant proportion of patients with chronic hepatitis B (cHBV) acquired the infection early in life through mother-to-child transmission. 41 , 42 The average age of our study population was 34.75±11.57 years.…”
