Human papillomavirus type 13 DNA in focal epithelial hyperplasia among Mexicans

Abstract: Human papillomavirus (HPV) type 13 DNA was detected in focal epithelial hyperplasia lesions of the oral mucosa in seven half-caste mexicans. The lesions contained intracellular papillomavirus-like particles with a diameter of about 50 nm. DNA extracted from biopsies contained unintegrated HPV type 13 DNA genomes as revealed by Southern blot hybridization. The HPV 13 DNA that was isolated in the present study had the same restriction enzyme cleavage map as HPV 13 DNA, previously described by others. It was more… Show more

“…7 Furthermore, we also found that 85% of patients tested for HPV were positive for HPV-13, confirming previous studies in Mexicans. 3 Other viral diseases were either present or mentioned in 9 patients (41%), among which common warts predominated. Association of FEH with other types of HPV infections has not been well established; however, there is 1 report stating that 8 (33%) of 24 patients had other viral diseases in addition to FEH (6 with common warts and 2 with condylomas).…”

“…Its prevalenee among eommunities of the same ethnie group may also differ (15). It is aeeepted that a strong assoeiation exists between FEH and the human papillomavirus (HPV) types 13 and 32 (16)(17)(18)(19)(20)(21)(22) and that lesions may be transient (4,9,10). In spite of these reports, information about the natural history of the disease is still ineomplete.…”

“…A viral etiology has been evidenced by several immunocytochemical and in situ hybridization studies that have identified the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) subtypes 13 and 32. Human papillomavirus subtypes 1, 6, 11 and 55 have also been implicated [3,12,[24][25][26][27][28]. It has been postulated that an infection with these viruses leads to irreversible cellular degeneration and affects the expression of cytokines 14, 15, 16 and 19, which is thought to result in an alteration in cytokeratin immune reactivity and may modify the metabolic pattern of epithelial cytokeratins [3].…”

“…The genetic predisposition has been suggested based on multiple reports of the disease occurring in various familial ethnic groups such as native communities from North and South America as well as in Inuit from Greenland [5,29], as it may make an individual's immune system susceptible to acquiring certain types of HPV infection [28]. An association between HLA-DR4 (DRBI*0404) and HPV infections has been discovered lately in a Mestizo population from Mexico [26]. Recent studies on FEH indicate a relationship with stated chronic immunodeficiency.…”
