Hydrodynamic study of a mixture of West Indian Cherry Residue and Soybean Grains in a spouted bed

Abstract: West Indian cherry, widely known as acerola in Latin America, is a fruit rich in vitamin C and other bioactive compounds. In Brazil, the largest producer of acerola in the world, the processing of this fruit results in large amounts of waste or residues. A method that allows these residues to be reused is drying. However, acerola residue has low flowability in spouted beds due to its low density and high moisture content. Therefore, in this study, soybean was used as an auxiliary material to maintain the stabi… Show more

“…As the Hertzian contact theory assumes a perfectly elastic contact, this model adds the effect of energy dissipation by including a term that follows the viscous damping law [3]. Therefore, the normal damping force ( depends on the normal relative velocity, , where and are the normal stiffness and rigidity respectively, e is the coefficient of restitution, and is the effective mass.…”

“…The time step in all the simulations was fixed at 20% of the critical time step calculated from the Rayleigh time, which was determined by the following equation [3]: Table 2 shows the experimental results obtained for the angles of repose (static and dynamic) of acerola residues and soybeans, as monoparticles and binary mixture. The mixture composition was of 50% of acerola seeds and 50% of soybeans.…”
