Hydrodynamics, mass transfer and rheological studies of gibberellic acid production in an airlift bioreactor

Abstract: Although a lot of research has been done into modelling microbial processes, the applicability of these concepts to problems specific for bioreactor design and optimization of process conditions is limited. This is partly due to the tendency to separate the two essential factors of bioreactor modelling, i.e. physical transport processes and microbial kinetics. The deficiencies of these models become especially evident in industrial production processes where O 2 supply is likely to become the limiting factor, … Show more

“…High levels of preferred nitrogenous compounds can drastically reduce the expression of GAbiosynthetic genes and GA amounts produced. Phosphate, although essential for growth, can at certain concentrations suppress secondary metabolism, inhibiting, for example, phosphatases and oxygenases (Spizek and Tichy 1995;Chávez-Parga et al 2007). In G. fujikuroi the GAs biosynthesis is not regulated by phosphate concentration or rate of growth (Giordano et al 1999).…”

“…The coupled CFD-PBM simulations of ALR are relatively rare, especially with the viscous or non-Newtonian fluid. In industrial applications, many processes [16][17][18] are operated in the viscous mediums or with catalysts showing non-Newtonian behavior.…”

“…Commercially, gibberellic acid (GA 3 ) is produced by selected strains of G. fujikuroi using aerobic submerged fermentation, although solid substrate fermentation has been investigated for its production [8,19]. Production of GA 3 by G. fujikuroi is strongly influenced by dissolved oxygen [10], the type of nitrogen source, the carbon source and the pH of the fermentation medium [6].…”
