Hypertension modifies OPG, RANK, and RANKL expression during the dental socket bone healing process in spontaneously hypertensive rats

Abstract: Hypertension alters the expression of RANK, RANKL, and OPG and delays the socket bone healing process. These alterations could influence some dental procedures such as orthodontic treatment and implant placement.

“…The major limitation of the present study is that we cannot draw conclusions about bone quality in untreated hypertensive patients. Thus, untreated hypertensive patients remain a risk not only to experience cardiovascular events but possibly also to have complications during osseointegration . A further limitation of this study was that patients received different antihypertensive drugs and doses.…”

“…Hypertension is associated with impaired calcium metabolism, decreased bone mineral density, osteoporosis, and consequently bone fractures . Hypertension also negatively affects bone regeneration . Hypertension changes alveolar bone quality, a crucial element to achieve primary stability in the early phase of the osseointegration of dental implants .…”

“…This might be because hypertension has been shown to modify OPG, RANK, and RANKL expression and repair of bone during the healing period after surgery. 31,32 In addition, considering the greater risk after surgery, more frequent and careful follow-up with OMSs, especially immediately after the procedure, might be advisable. Although most recurrences develop soon after the surgical treatment of BRONJ, all health care providers should remember that recurrence can also develop long after the surgery.…”

“…The scores were based on staining of cells in the predetermined areas, which was indicative of dynamic bone tissue. To simplify the comparison among the different groups and periods, the immunohistochemistry scores were converted into frequencies of percentage for the period of evaluation (Pedrosa et al, 2009;Manrique et al, 2015). The histological scoring was light, moderate, or intense, based on the stained area (Table 1).…”
