N‐pyrrolidine functionalized C60‐fullerenes/epoxy nanocomposites

Abstract: A series of functionalized C 60 -fullerene/ epoxy nanocomposites were prepared, and their respective ultimate tensile strengths were determined. The functionalization route of the fullerenes was performed using the Prato reaction, with modified amino acids, resulting in the formation of N-pyrrolidine rings across the [6,6] junctions. Characterization of the functionalized fullerenes was done using Laser Desorption Ionization Time-ofFlight (LDI-TOF) mass spectrometry. The mechanical properties of the nanocompos… Show more

“…Prado's reaction, briefly the 1,3-dipolar cyclo-addition of the azomethine ylides forming pyrrolidine rings, has been reported to be an interesting functionalization process on surface of carbonaceous materials based on the stable bonding of functional groups with carbon surfaces. [302][303][304][305] The formed pyrrolidine rings consist of two covalent C-C bonds belonging to the carbon surface. This technique was also applied for CNT functionalization.…”

“…This addition of the pyrrolidine ring transforms the C 60 into an ntype semiconductor. 33,34 ■ EXPERIMENTAL SECTION Materials and Reagents. Butoconazole nitrate, Nmethylfulleropyrrolidine, graphite powder (<20 μm, synthetic), methanol, monosodium phosphate, disodium phosphate, sodium nitrate, sodium chloride, potassium nitrate, potassium chloride, D-sorbitol, glycerol, EDTA disodium salt, DL-histidine, sodium benzoate, lidocaine, and fusidic acid were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich (Milwaukee, USA); paraffin oil (d 4 , 20 0.86 g cm −1 ) was obtained from Fluka (Buchs, Sweden).…”

“…They are obtained through the Prato reaction, in which azomethine ylides are added to a [6,6] junction of the C 60 in a 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition. This addition of the pyrrolidine ring transforms the C 60 into an n-type semiconductor. , …”

“…58 A series of N-pyrrolidine C 60 fullerene/epoxy nanocomposites has been prepared using the Prato reaction, and their respective ultimate tensile strengths determined. 59 Two new fullerene amino acids have been prepared by dipolar addition to C 60 of azido amino acids derived from phenylalanine and lysine and characterised by UV-Vis and cyclic voltammetry analysis. 60 The first C 60 fullerenyl azide was prepared through Lewis acid-promoted addition of trimethylsilyl azide to a cage-opened fullerene derivative.…”
