Primula hunanensis sp. nov. (Primulaceae) from Hunan, south–central China

Abstract: A new species of Primulaceae, Primula hunanensis G. Hao, C. M. Hu & X. L. Yu, from Hunan, China, is described and illustrated. Based on its general morphology it clearly belongs to P. sect. Carolinella, characterized by the calyptrate capsules, but can be distinguished by its adaxially glabrous leaves which are much longer than the petioles, blade base broadly cuneate to subrounded, umbellate inflorescence, and glabrous pedicels and calyx.

“…With the inclusion of the species described here, Primula sect. Carolinella encompasses 14 species (Gong and Fang 2003, Richards 2003, Yu et al 2015, Xu et al 2016d). This section is believed to be a primitive group in Primula (Hu 1994, Yan et al 2010.…”

“…In recent years, after the 'Flora of China' was published, many new species of Primula have been described from China (Fang 1998, Gong and Fang 2003, Hu and Geng 2003, Li and Hu 2009, Hu and Hao 2011, Wu et al 2013, Xu et al 2014a, 2014b, 2015a, 2015b, 2016a, 2016b, 2016c, 2016d, Yu et al 2015, He et al 2017, Li et al 2017, Yuan et al 2017). “…Although such Carolinella capsules are very different from the operculate capsules of P. ambita, P. obconica, and other species, Pax & Knuth (1905) transferred the genus to a new Primula section Carolinella. However, it is now widely believed that calyptrate capsules uniquely indicate membership of section Carolinella, and with confusion of the terms calyptra and operculum several species that otherwise appear to belong in section Obconicolisteri have been included in (Gong & Fang, 2003;Yu et al, 2015) or transferred into (Hu, 1990) section Carolinella. This will be considered in detail in a separate paper.…”
