The work here presented aimed at developing an analytical method for the simultaneous determination of 22 pharmaceuticals and personal care products, including 3 transformation products, in sewage and sludge. A meticulous method optimization, involving an experimental design, was carried out. The developed method was fully automated and consisted of the online extraction of 17 mL of water sample by Direct Immersion Solid Phase MicroExtraction followed by On-fiber Derivatization coupled to Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry (DI-SPME - On-fiber Derivatization - GC - MS). This methodology was validated for 12 of the initial compounds as a reliable (relative recoveries above 90% for sewage and 70% for sludge; repeatability as %RSD below 10% in all cases), sensitive (LODs below 20 ng L in sewage and 10 ng g in sludge), versatile (sewage and sewage-sludge samples up to 15,000 ng L and 900 ng g, respectively) and green analytical alternative for many medium-tech routine laboratories around the world to keep up with both current and forecast environmental regulations requirements. The remaining 10 analytes initially considered showed insufficient suitability to be included in the final method. The methodology was successfully applied to real samples generated in a pilot scale sewage treatment reactor.

La presencia de contaminantes emergentes, como los antibióticos, representa una gran preocupación debido a los efectos que causa en los ecosistemas y la salud de los humanos. El mayor impacto de este tipo de contaminantes es la resistencia bacteriana en medios naturales, principalmente en el agua, y aunque existen métodos para removerlos, las trazas de antibióticos no pueden ser retiradas completamente por las plantas tratadoras de aguas residuales (PTAR). La adsorción es uno de los procesos para remover antibióticos del agua residual y los aluminosilicatos (Al-Si), naturales o modificados, son compuestos adsorbentes que no han recibido la suficiente atención, sin embargo, algunos estudios han demostrado su eficacia para remover antibióticos betalactámicos, como las cefalosporinas de primera, segunda, tercera y cuarta generación. Precisamente, esta familia de medicamentos es la principal causante de resistencia bacteriana en ambientes nosocomiales y naturales. El uso de Al-Si modificados con surfactantes, como bromuro de hexadeciltimetilamonio (HDTMA-Br), bromuro dodeciltrimetil amonio (DTAB) y nanopartículas de óxidos, es una alternativa promisoria para el tratamiento avanzado de aguas contaminadas con antibióticos. Algunas investigaciones han encontrado una mejora de 61% en el proceso de sorción de cefalexina con Al-Si modificados con nanopartículas metálicas y, por otro lado, un aumento del 65% en el proceso de remoción del mismo antibiótico cuando son modificados con Fe3O4. Lo anterior pone de manifiesto que la modificación superficial de los Al-Si mejoran considerablemente el proceso de adsorción de cefalosporinas

Introduction: This article presents the results of the research carried out from January 2018 to December 2019, in an institution providing third-level health services (IPHS), located in Tunja (Boyacá), in eastern central Colombia. Problem: There are various difficulties related to the management of waste produced by the IPHS; Irresponsible practices cause the spread of infections, which have repercussions in critical situations locally, regionally and internationally. Objective: To evaluate the management of hospital, hazardous and similar waste (HCWM), carried out by an IPHS, and to formulate strategies for its improvement. Methodology: The research was carried out in three (3) stages: data collection (through inspections and weighing of waste), data analysis (for the qualification and quantification of the waste), and finally, some guidelines for its proper management were proposed, based on the context of the organization. Results: The IPHS generated 397.6 tonnes of hospital, hazardous and similar waste (MW). Biohazard waste (BW) predominated over the others (54.11%), followed by usable non-hazardous waste - UNHW (41.53%) and chemical and pharmaceutical waste - CPW (4, 37%). Conclusion: The entity complies with the main requirements of the national government, identifying good utilization and biosecurity practices; however, under diagnosis and with the implementation of guidelines emanating from research, it is possible to optimize procedures. Originality: The guidelines and activities for the separation, use and internal collection of waste within an IPHS were observed and then interrelated with the services provided and their resources. This work could be a guideline for related institutions. Limitations: The article focuses on the internal and non-external management of MW.
