Identification and Discrimination of Salmonella enterica Serovar Gallinarum Biovars Pullorum and Gallinarum Based on a One-Step Multiplex PCR Assay

Abstract: Salmonella enterica serovar Gallinarum biovars Pullorum (S. Pullorum) and Gallinarum (S. Gallinarum) can result in pullorum disease and fowl typhoid in avian species, respectively, and cause considerable economic losses in poultry in many developing countries. Conventional Salmonella serotyping is a time-consuming, labor-intensive and expensive process, and the two biovars cannot be distinguished using the traditional serological method. In this study, we developed a rapid and reliable one-step multiplex polym… Show more

“…Some of these prevalent serovars could lead to serious zoonotic diseases [ 4 ]. While S. Pullorum and S. Gallinarum are connected with diseases in poultry and they were reported to cause financial sufferers because of the replacement of infected flocks and associated treatment costs to poultry farmers [ 5 ]. Nontyphoidal Salmonella spp.…”

“…Salmonella enterica serovar Gallinarum (Salmonella Gallinarum) and the avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) are major public health concerns in domestic poultry species causing acute illnesses, such as typhoid fever and colibacillosis, respectively [1,2]. For the prevention of these infections, vaccines traditionally developed using live-attenuated and killed microorganisms have been widely used [3].…”

“…More than 2,600 identified serotypes display different pathogenicities and an extensive host range ( Ma et al., 2018 ). In particular, poultry and poultry products have been considered main sources of Salmonella ( Youn et al., 2017 ), which can cause many poultry diseases, such as pullorum disease and fowl typhoid, and has caused huge losses in the poultry industry worldwide ( Dan et al., 2018 ). Therefore, the early prevention and control of Salmonella infection has received increasing attention and being an urgent need that exists to develop a rapid detection method to control the spread of Salmonella at an early stage ( Draz and Lu, 2016 ).…”
