Identification of G protein‐coupled receptors required for vitellogenesis and egg development in an insect with panoistic ovary

Abstract: G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), a superfamily of integral transmembrane proteins regulate a variety of physiological processes in insects. Juvenile hormone (JH) is known to stimulate Vitellogenin (Vg) synthesis in the fat body, secretion into the hemolymph and uptake by developing oocytes. However, the role of GPCRs in JHdependent insect vitellogenesis and oocyte maturation remains elusive. In the present study, we performed transcriptomic analysis and RNA interference (RNAi) screening in vitellogenic fem… Show more

“…LmDDX3 knockdown led to small underdeveloped terminal oocytes (Figure 1d). Similar phenotype was also reported in other genes' knockdown lines (Guo et al, 2019; Jing et al, 2018; Luo et al, 2017; Song et al, 2013; Song et al, 2014; Song et al, 2018; Tetlak et al, 2015; Tokar et al,2014; Wang et al, 2017; Wu et al, 2016; Wu et al, 2018; Zheng et al, 2020), and all these genes or factors were indicated to be involved in vitellogenesis, a key process of oocyte development and maturation in oviparous animals including birds, fish, frog, mammalian, and insects (Polzonetti‐Magni et al, 2004; Ruan et al, 2020; Valle, 1993).…”

“…(f) Grp78‐1 expression in the fat bodies of female adults. (g) A modified model from Zheng et al (2020) for LmDDX3 function in locust ovarian development and oocyte maturation. LmDDX3 directly or indirectly promotes LmVg , at least partially via JH signaling pathway, and regulates LmVgR for oocyte maturation and ovarian growth.…”

“…In L. migratoria , 22 GPCRs were identified in the ovarian transcriptome of vitellogenic females. RNAi screening revealed that Orphan receptor-A (OR-A1 and OR-A2), C-type muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (mAChR-C) and Cirl-like (CirlL) played key roles in ovarian Vg transportation and uptake (Zheng et al, 2020 ).…”
