Identification of Strains of Citrus tristeza virus by Subtraction Hybridization

Abstract: Citrus sudden death (CSD) appears to be a new disease that is a serious problem in Brazil. Symptoms of CSD include yellow stain in the phloem of the rootstock. The cause is not known, but it appears to be infectious and may only affect trees budded on Rangpur lime. In a survey in Brazil, in addition to CSD, we observed numerous trees on Rangpur lime that were obviously declining but had remained in production for several years. Trees with this disease, referred to as Rangpur lime decline (RLD) were different f… Show more

“…To our knowledge, all attempts to identify a CTV variant associated with CSD have produced inconclusive or negative results (14,35). The present work has shown a very strong association between the presence of CSDaV and disease symptoms, strongly suggesting that the presence of the CSDaV is a necessary if not sufficient condition for the development of the disease.…”

“…Alternatively, a different virus could be the causative agent of the CSD disease (6,30). Several attempts to associate CSD with a CTV mutant have failed (14,35).…”

“…It was first seen in Brazil in 1999, and has been detected in more than four million trees. It is a serious threat to the Brazilian citrus industry, as more than 85% of 200 million sweet orange trees are grafted on Rangpur lime rootstock (Bassanezi et al ., 2003; Derrick et al ., 2003). The causal agent of CSD is unknown.…”
