Identification of strong interleukin‐10 inducing lactic acid bacteria which down‐regulate T helper type 2 cytokines

Abstract: Our results indicate that certain strains of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria modulate the production of cytokines by monocytes and lymphocytes, and may divert the immune system in a regulatory or tolerant mode. These specific strains may be favorable to use in prevention or treatment of atopic disease.

“…Our data is consistent with previous studies showing that probiotic bacteria are able to induce TNF-α secretion in human PBMC [8,10,11,17] . However, there were considerable differences in the ability of different probiotic bacteria to induce IL-12 and IFN-γ.…”

“…However, there were considerable differences in the ability of different probiotic bacteria to induce IL-12 and IFN-γ. Interestingly, Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains which have previously been shown to stimulate IL-12 and IFN-γ production in human PBMC [11][12][13][14]17] , were in the present study found to be relatively poor inducers of these cytokines. Instead, we found that novel probiotic S. thermophilus and Leuconostoc strains were extremely good inducers of these Th1 type cytokines.…”

“…On the other hand, it has also been reported that some probiotics decrease IgE production by suppressing excess production of Th2-type cytokine rather than by inducing production of Th1-type cytokines to ameliorate development of type-1 allergies (Iwabuchi et al, 2007;Iwabuchi et al, 2009;Kanzato et al, 2008;Niers et al, 2005;Takahashi et al, 2006). “…In the long term, upregulation of IL-10 may reduce inflammatory process and help to reestablish a normal immune balance (Sherman and Kalman, 2004). Probiotics can exert their immune-modulatory function by acting on IL-10 secretion with a species-specific action (Niers et al, 2005). Higher IL-10 levels were found in cells of the large intestine of mice fed viable L. acidophilus CRL 730, compared with unfed control group, also showing a dosedependent effect (Galdeano and Perdigó n, 2004).…”
