IEA Wind Task 32: Wind Lidar Identifying and Mitigating Barriers to the Adoption of Wind Lidar

Abstract: IEA Wind Task 32 exists to identify and mitigate barriers to the adoption of lidar for wind energy applications. It leverages ongoing international research and development activities in academia and industry to investigate site assessment, power performance testing, controls and loads, and complex flows. Since its initiation in 2011, Task 32 has been responsible for several recommended practices and expert reports that have contributed to the adoption of ground-based, nacelle-based, and floating lidar by the … Show more

“…In 2015, the Carbon Trust published a roadmap for the commercial acceptance of this technology in the wind industry [24]. A state-of-the-art report and recommended practices developed by the IEA Wind Task 32 [25] can be found in [26], and several validation tests and commercial developments in [27][28][29][30][31][32][33].…”

“…Examples of very short-term probabilistic forecasts of wind power using statistical methods can be found in [13,14]. These probabilistic forecasts are known as predictive densities or probability distributions and provide important information for making risk-based decisions [15].Over the last two decades, the use of remote sensing measurements such as long-range lidars [16] has been extended in the wind industry. These systems are capable of measuring wind speed and direction (under certain assumptions) up to 30 km [17].…”

“…Doppler LiDARs are popular for offshore applications because of their mobility and capacity to measure wind remotely. According to the report on International Energy Agency (IEA) Wind Task 32, the use of Doppler LiDARs to detect and measure complex flow, to estimate second-order statistics for load verification and to assist turbine control has to be further developed [178]. As mentioned previously, incorporating numerical models in reconstruction of wind fields from LiDAR measurements will generally provide better estimates.…”
