Immunohistochemical Identification of Campylobacter fetus in Natural Cases of Bovine and Ovine Abortions

Abstract: An immunohistochemistry (IHC) procedure for the detection of Campylobacter fetus antigens using an avidin-biotin complex technique was performed on formalin fixed bovine and ovine fetal tissues from 26 natural cases of Campylobacter spp. abortion (four ovine and 22 bovine). The species of Campylobacter isolated included C. fetus ssp. venerealis from 13 bovine fetuses, C. fetus ssp. fetus from two ovine and one bovine fetus, Campylobacter jejuni from seven bovine fetuses, Campylobacter lari from two ovine fetus… Show more

“…When the results were analyzed in relation to its origin, 6.5% (6/92) (SMIBERT, 1978).

“…38 An immunohiostochemical technique has also been developed, with a sensitivity of 94% for detecting C. fetus in aborted fetal tissues. 39 Systemic antibody responses are not helpful because they are often due to nonpathogenic Campylobacter spp. One specific antibody detection method is the vaginal mucus agglutination test to detect antibodies in preputial scrapings, vaginal mucus, or aborted fetal fluids.…”

“…venerealis is an obligate parasite of the bovine genitalia. The infection is unapparent and involves the epithelium of the penis and the fornix of the prepuce of bulls [18,19]. In a susceptible herd, the introduction of the organism is followed by a period of infertility of all the breeding females (120 days).…”

“…Bovine genital campylobacteriosis (BGC) is a bacterial venereal disease that may lead to infertility, early embryonic mortality, and abortion [12,[17][18][19]. BGC occurs worldwide and causes high economic losses to the bovine industry.…”
