Immunologic Mechanism of Patchouli Alcohol Anti-H1N1 Influenza Virus May Through Regulation of the RLH Signal Pathway In Vitro

Abstract: Patchouli alcohol (PA) is a kind of methanol extracted from traditional Chinese medicine Pogostemonis Herba. Our research aimed to observe the anti-influenza virus role of PA in vitro. 16HBE (human respiratory epithelial cell) was infected by H1N1 (A/FM1/1/47) to set the cell model. Then the 16HBE was co-cultivated with three kinds of immune cells: dendritic cells, macrophages, and monocytes, PA (the concentration is 10 μg/mL) was added as a treatment intervention for 24 h. The immune cells and the supernate w… Show more

“…Moreover, Some studies also showed that hypercytokinemia which occurred in the lungs, thymus and serum caused the mortal injury during viral infection, but neglecting a moderate antiviral cytokines modulation in spleen may also contribute to resist viral infection (Wu et al, 2013). In our study, after treating with LPG in infected mice, IFN-γ was mainly expressed in the spleen without causing deadly lung inflammatory injury, indicating the IFN-γ expressed in different organs may present different functions (Fig.…”

“…In addition, Lippia junelliana and Lippia turbinate essential oils showed activity against the Junin virus. Anti-influenza A (H2N2) activity was exhibited by the essential oil compounds of Pogostemon cablin [1, 9799] and the antiviral property of the essential oils obtained from fruits and leaves of Fortunella margarita exhibited potential activity against avian influenza A virus (H5N1) [94]. Roy et al [100] indicated the potential antiviral activity of Trachyspermum ammi oil against Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV).…”

“…PA is used for the quality control objective of patchouli oil in pharmaceutical industry (The Pharmacopoeia Commission of PRC 2010). Accumulating reports have demonstrated that PA had multiple effects such as anti-inflammatory [7, 8], antivirus [912], antimicrobial [13–17], and insecticidal [18, 19], protective effect on fluidity of intestinal epithelial cells [20], protective effect on acute lung injury [21], radical-scavenging activity [22], inhibitory activity on platelet-activating factor (PAF) activation [23], and antiemetic activity [24]. …”
