Impact of Chainsaw Power on Fuel and Oil Consumption

Abstract: This research was carried out in a selection stand of beech and fir, where logging was performed with chainsaws of different powers. Two chainsaws of 3.9 kW were used for work on one area, while on the other one the applied tools were a combination of a smaller and a larger saw (2.5 kW and 3.9 kW). After logging, the consumption of energy products (fuel (gasoline and motor oil mix ratio 50:1) and chainsaw oil) was measured for each individual chainsaw by the method of refueling. It was found that the power of … Show more

“…Nowak et al [1] reported that a chainsaw requires 50 mL of lubricating oil to cut 1 m 3 of wood. Antonić [23] reported that approximately 80 mL/m 3 of lubricants is consumed during beech harvesting. Furthermore, Klamerus-Iwan [24] reported that 30 million m 3 of wood is harvested and approximately 6 million dm 3 of lubricants is used in Poland each year, which translates to a lubricant consumption of 200 mL/m 3 during wood harvesting.…”

“…A cutting device with a saw chain is a source of vibration and noise during its operation. The solution to the mentioned requirements may require innovation and adaptation of saw chain mechanisms to new working conditions (Krilek et al2023;Kuvik et al 2017Kuvik et al , 2021Antonić 2023;Maciak 2017). For the functionality of chainsaws, it is possible to provide different types of motor drives, such as electric motors, combustion, pneumatic, or hydraulic motors.…”

“…The felling process can use heavy equipment (shear head, harvester) and can still use chainsaws which also still play an important role in forest harvesting. Chainsaws remain crucial in the process of logging trees [12,13] and even though there are more harvesters working, chainsaws still dominate [14]. PT United Tractors Tbk presents the Komatsu PC130F-7 to carry out the process of harvesting industrial plantation forest products which have several stages, starting from the logging process, arranging to remove the wood until it is ready to be transported to the processing location.…”
