This review includes works published in the general scientific literature during 2011 on the effects of anthropogenic pollutants on freshwater organisms. It begins with a section on research reviews. This is followed by reviews of research categorized in sections to reflect the pollutant class. These sections include wastewater, textile industry pollution, stormwater and non-point source pollution, nutrients, botanical extracts, surfactants, metals, perchlorate, persistent organic pollutants, pharmaceuticals, endocrine disruptors, antimicrobials, pesticides, petroleum hydrocarbons and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), ionic liquids, and nanomaterials. The final section includes works describing innovations in the field of freshwater pollution research. Research Reviews Dahms et al. (2011) presented a review of the use of rotifers in ecotoxicological research over the last 15 years. These authors report that rotifers have served as important invertebrate aquatic model organisms for ecophysiology, ecotoxicology, and environmental genomics. Brix et al. (2011a) reviewed the literature on the toxicity of metals to aquatic insects in order to determine why laboratory studies indicate that aquatic insects are insensitive to metals, while field studies often indicate that aquatic insects are among the most sensitive aquatic invertebrates. The authors suggest that the vastly different results are due to the short-term nature of laboratory bioassays, as well as the fact that laboratory studies do not take into account effects upon primary productivity. The authors also point out that there have been no conclusive studies to evaluate whether dietary metal accumulation results in toxicity to aquatic insects. Schaller et al. (2011) reviewed the literature on the effects of metal and metalloid pollutants in freshwater ecosystems and how this is impacted by the decomposition of leaf litter. Francis (2011) provided a review on how modern warfare affects freshwater ecosystems.
