Impact of Urbanization on Local Air Quality: Differences in Urban and Rural Areas of Balikesir, Turkey

Abstract: Research Article:The temporal evolution and the spatial distribution of O 3 , NO 2 , and BTEX were analyzed by using geostatistical techniques. Motorway lines appeared to be hot spots for BTEX and NO 2 but not for O 3. High O 3 concentrations were related to rural areas in summer. The results suggest that spatial auto-correlation analysis has advantage to compare the strength and signifi cance of spatial dependence for air pollutants when not enough measurement points are available. Review: Organoclays have be… Show more

“…As a result, land use patterns and changes create tremendous stress on the local, regional and global environment [4][5][6][7][8][9]. One of the most essential environmental results of urbanization is the deterioration of air quality [10][11][12][13]. Actually, air pollution has been the shared challenge for megacities or metropolitan regions across the world, especially in developing countries such as China [14][15][16].…”

“…The rapid growth in road traffic and urban populations has led to the rise in quantity of pollutants. However, worsening of the conditions related with air pollution in urban areas also causes a decrease on the health conditions and welfare of the residents together with the ecosystems lived around [2][3][4].…”

“…Generally, studies on air pollution are carried out with the data collected from continuous monitoring stations in urban areas [4,7]. Although this approach is widely used, many research on air pollution has shown signs of the existence variability between intra urban areas and areas of street scale, which may be important for air quality indicators [8] and therefore does not represent environmental exposure.…”
