This study aimed to describe teachers’ perception of the use of Google Classroom to assess students’ English skills and how the teachers assessed the students during online learning nowadays by using qualitative research method. The participants were 18 teachers who were teaching senior high school level in Pasuruan, East Java. Their ages were around 23 to 58 years old while answering the questionnaire. The data were collected by using open questionnaire and interview, then analysed by using narrative analysis. The results of this study showed that most teachers used Google classroom to assess students’ English skills because it was simpler and faster. This study suggests teachers use Google Classroom while assessing students’ English skills by providing more online assessments activities. The teachers are expected to use various platforms to facilitate the students. However, the students and teachers must adapt to the condition during the COVID-19 pandemic with the online learning system.

The systematic review was completed to examine studies on the effects of Google Classroom (GC) usage as a learning technology on ESL/EFL learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most studies on this matter were one-off instead of longitudinal and primarily focused on the perception of its users. This study identifies gaps and additional aspects that could be investigated in future studies. Three databases, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, were explored to collect relevant data. Primary searchers between 2020 and 2022 revealed 217 studies on the topic under investigation. After scrutinizing abstracts and removing duplicates, 12 were retained for further analysis. A thematic analysis was conducted to derive the benefits and issues of using GC in learning English. It was revealed that GC could play a role in increasing students' achievement in the four primary skills in the English language, listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Issues with using GC mainly revolved around external factors rather than the learning platform itself. It is recommended that future studies look at other aspects of GC usage in language learning, such as its specific features and learning materials uploaded to it, and whether different online learning platforms than GC could yield similar results to GC.

This study will delineate and complete prior research gaps in the context of Papuan EFL students developing speaking abilities using Google Classroom. The main objective of this study is to investigate the impact of utilizing Google Classroom to develop speaking skills digitally. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach, with data gathered through offline interviews and online observations of Tadris English students who developed speaking subjects. Then, interpretive thematic analysis is used to analyze the data throughout the process which consists of data collection, reduction, interpretation, presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that students experienced several impacts from the use of Google classroom in learning speaking skills. The impact of using Google classroom is to save time and money, train student discipline in managing study time, make students more independent and proactive in accessing learning resources, trigger vocabulary changes, make students more difficult to get corrective feedback, limit student interaction directly, make students feel insecure, confused, and anxious, affecting student learning outcomes, understanding of the material delivered is not maximum. As a consequence, instructors should think more on the numerous preparations and instructional tactics utilized in teaching virtual speaking abilities. Of course, further study on the usage of Google Classroom for language skills other than speaking is required to enhance the conclusions of existing research. So that the guide for utilizing the learning platform in English learning is more detailed.
