Implementation of herd health program to improve survival of Boer goats in Malaysia

Abstract: A Boer goat breeding farm with 800 heads of breeder females, 50 breeder males, and 400 growing goats of various ages in Sabah, Malaysia was selected to study the effect of implementing herd health program. This included vaccination program against pneumonic mannheimiosis; fecal monitoring for helminthiasis, coccidiosis, and colibacillosis; and introduction of modified feeding regime comprised of day-time grazing and feeding of cut grass and supplemented feed. The herd health program was implemented in Septembe… Show more

“…The reported case shows that the animal presented with severe respiratory such as loud, harsh breathing and emaciation highly indicate pneumonia (Gunalan et al 2011). Pneumonic mannheimiosis and helminthiasis are found to be one of the primary causes of post-arrival mortalities (Salisi et al 2012) who reported that transportation stress which includes handling, loading or unloading of the goats lead to the death of a goat from Australia to Malaysia. Furthermore, the hot and humid climate may exacerbate the occurrence of the disease.…”

“…This has been done with Mannheimia sp. both in the form of killed cells and in the form of recombinant bacterial vector vaccines (Salisi et al 2012;Annas and Zamri-Saad 2021). Also, aerosols with live vaccines containing an attenuated pathogen, such as Pasteurella multocida B:2 GDH7, offer a potential advantage of surviving long enough to spread across a herd for efficient immunisation (Rafidah and El-Sayed 2013;Annas and Zamri-Saad 2021).…”

“…Ovine and caprine are equally vulnerable when they are subjected to severe stress or harsh environmental conditions [1]. The main causative agent of mannheimiosis is the Mannheimia haemolytica ( M. haemolytica ) serotype A2 [3,4]. Climatic stress, poor nutrition, poor husbandry, and mainly transportation stress are the predisposing factors leading to immunosuppression that contributes to the development of pneumonic pasteurellosis in sheep and goats, leading to huge economic losses [2].…”
