Implementation of multiple interpretation data model concepts in CIDOC CRM and compatible models

Abstract: Highlights: Cultural Heritage modelling involves two different ontological concepts: reality and information held about it. Historical Objects existence is a sequence made by events, stability periods and changes affecting it. Multiple Interpretation Data Model mapping to CIDOC CRM and its extension proposal take into account difference between reality and information. They also manage sequence concept. Abstract:Modelling cultural heritage is a research topic shared by a broad scientific community. Although… Show more

“…The proposed data model could serve as the foundation for developing an automated system for archaeological documentation and data integration. Another research introduced two CIDOC-CRM extension proposals [14]. The innovative concepts of the multiple interpretation data model (MIDM) were mapped into the CIDOC CRM.…”

“…The evaluation of the above mentioned mappings was limited to generating questions for researchers [11,15], evaluating a sample set of archival records [12], submitting a questionnaire to several categories of users [18], or checking inferred properties and SPARQL queries [14].…”

“…However, it is limited to a periodic representation which can lead to incoherence when representing some heritage sources. The system does not allow several interpretations of the same sources as proposed by [49]. Finally, at that time, the primary way to implement such information model was the relational database environment.…”

“…We describe the four design steps and some of the most crucial outputs to facilitate the development and implementation of a HIS. It is interesting to note that such a complexity of information can be found in several other areas-heritage data, however, has the particularity of requiring multiple interpretations [41,49].…”

“…SPECTRUM 5.0 specifies 21 collections management procedures. In addition to inventory and cataloguing -which in turn can follow other standards, such as the ones defined by ICOM's International Committee for Documentation, CIDOC CRM (see Doerr, 2003;Van Ruymbeke, Hallot, Nys, & Billen, 2018) or the Italian Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo e la Documentazione, ICCD (see Mancinelli, 2018)-, the procedures cover the following aspects as location and movement control, loans in and out, condition checking and technical assessment, collections care and conservation, emergency planning for collections, damage and loss, just to mention the most strictly material aspects of a museum object.…”
