Improved diagnostic value by combining plasma PON1 level with tumor biomarkers in Colorectal Cancer patients

Abstract: The incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) ranks third among all cancers in China and improvements in screening for CRC have an important impact on prevention and control of the disease. Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) is a calcium ion-dependent hydrolase that is widely distributed in tissue. Its diagnostic value in colorectal cancer has been reported, but the diagnostic value of combining PON1 with carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9), carbohydrate antigen 12-5 (CA12-5) in colorectal cancer h… Show more

“…This also verifies why CEA is the only tumor marker recommended as routine screening for colorectal cancer in the National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines [ 19 ]. Our results also showed that CEA had the best screening efficiency for colorectal cancer among all single indicators, with an AUCROC of 0.847 and specificity up to 91.00%, which is similar to the results reported by Zhang et al [ 20 ] and Huang et al [ 21 ]. However, our results showed that CEA sensitivity was only 70.59%.…”

“…26 In the current study, the AUC for serum CEA was 0.814, which was similar to that reported previously. 27,28 Only MMP-7 and TIMP-1 levels showed better diagnostic values, and thus deserve close attention, whereas MMP-9, MMP-11, TIMP-2, and CA19-9 appeared less promising. Both the specificity and sensitivity were improved using a combined detection model including MMP-7, TIMP-1, and CEA, with acceptable results.…”

“…CRC is a common digestive tract malignancy with a high incidence and mortality rate, and early diagnosis is crucial for the health examination population [ 21 , 22 ]. Investigations of novel biomarkers, especially blood-based biomarkers for early diagnosis of CRC, are highly warranted because liquid biopsy is convenient and minimally invasive [ 23 ].…”
