Purpose -Business analytics (BA) has attracted growing attention mainly due to the phenomena of Big Data. While studies suggest that BA positively affects organizational performance, there is a lack of academic research. This paper therefore examines the extent to which top-and bottom-performing companies differ regarding their use and organizational facilitation of BA.Design/methodology/approach -Hypotheses are developed drawing on the information processing view and contingency theory, and tested using MANOVA to analyze data collected from 117 UK manufacture companies.Findings -Top-and bottom-performing companies differ significantly in their use of BA, data-driven environment, and level of fit between BA and data-drain environment.Practical implications -Extensive use of BA and data-driven decisions will lead to superior firm performance. Companies wishing to use BA to improve decision-making and performance need to develop relevant analytical strategy to guide BA activities and design its structure and business processes to embed BA activities.Originality/value -This study provides useful management insights into the effective use of BA for improving organizational performance.

Public sector managers and researchers have emphasized the importance of performance measurement. Nevertheless, few theoretical and empirical studies are found in Brazilian Judiciary Courts' literature. In order to empirically identify which variables (IT investments, own or outsourced human capital) are more relevant for improving productivity, the current research proposes a model using secondary data extracted from the Justiça em Números (Justice in Numbers) report, using structural equation modeling for the analysis. The results suggest that: (a) all variables are relevant for improving productivity in Brazilian Courts, confirming our first three theoretical hypotheses; and (b) own human capital has a greater impact on productivity than outsourced, confirming the fourth. For those who are responsible for reforms, this finding indicates that IT is not the most important investment. However a question remains: Seen as a cure for almost all problems in the public sector, is it possible to improve performance without hard IT investments? For future research there are some additional questions: Why is own human capital more relevant than outsourced? Which variables should be included in the model for improving the general significance? The answers can help improve Brazilian court productivity.

Collaborative relationships and competitive performance of Brazilian companies Relaciones colaborativas y desempeño competitivo de empresas brasileñas RESUMORelacionamentos interorganizacionais colaborativos representam potenciais fontes de vantagem competitiva, especialmente no contexto de gerenciamento de processos críticos em cadeias de suprimentos. A colaboração entre empresas pode ser fundamental à minimização do risco de comportamentos oportunistas entre parceiros e influenciar o melhor aproveitamento de recursos complementares entre os agentes econômicos. O objetivo deste artigo é descrever a natureza da relação entre a colaboração na cadeia de suprimentos e o desempenho competitivo, avaliando o efeito dos sistemas e das tecnologias de informação como moderadores da relação entre colaboração e desempenho. Utilizando a modelagem de equações estruturais para analisar dados referentes a uma amostra de 368 empresas brasileiras, verificou-se o impacto positivo da colaboração no desempenho competitivo das empresas e a atuação dos sistemas e das tecnologias de informação como moderadores dessa relação.
