The study investigates the effect of generic strategic choices and management control systems (MCS) on the organizational performance of large and medium-sized companies located in Espírito Santo, using Contingency Theory as the theoretical framework. It is a quantitative study, using a survey as the data collection technique. 73 questionnaires were validated, after being completed by those responsible for the controlling or related area of these enterprises over the period between February and April of 2014. The data analysis was performed using the structural equations modeling technique. The main results indicate that: (i) competitive forces shape the strategy adopted by the organizations surveyed, however, contrary to what the literature predicts, those companies that operate in more competitive environments choose a strategy of cost leadership instead of differentiation; (ii) the design and use of the MCS is influenced by the strategy chosen, and the use of contemporary management practices is associated with a differentiation strategy; (iii) strategic choices and the MCS have a positive impact on organizational performance. In addition, those companies that combine differentiation strategy with contemporary management practices perform better than the other companies analyzed.
The ability to recover from disruptions is important for organizations and supply chains. Empirical data were used to investigate factors that affect supply chain recovery from disruptions, including collaboration, visibility, flexibility, analytical orientation, and supply chain risk management. A literature review was conducted to build an online questionnaire that was applied to manufacturing firms in Brazil. This work’s statistical method includes confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling. Our results indicate that a package of resilience capabilities - collaboration, flexibility, visibility, and analytical orientation - positively affect supply chain resilience. Improving such capabilities, therefore, will allow supply chains to recover better from disruptions. It was also discovered, however, that supply chains do not recover from disruptions by way of supply chain risk management alone. Mutual impacts also exist between the group of resilience capabilities and supply chain risk management.
Resumo O artigo avalia a relação entre Gestão Escolar e desempenho na Prova Brasil-2015 de Matemática dos estudantes do 9º ano e o papel moderador da complexidade da Gestão Escolar nessa relação. Para o desenvolvimento do modelo hierárquico exploratório foi utilizada modelagem de equações estruturais, técnica Partial Least Squares Path Modeling (PLS-PM). A amostra foi composta por 182 escolas da rede de ensino público do Espírito Santo. Os dados foram coletados dos microdados do Saeb. Evidenciou-se impacto positivo direto da Gestão Escolar no desempenho, cujos estudos anteriores apontam para uma relação indireta. Igualmente, a complexidade da Gestão Escolar atua como um moderador dessa relação, com impacto negativo. Dessa forma, quanto maior o nível de complexidade da Gestão Escolar, mais impactante será a Gestão Escolar no desempenho. Assim, este estudo reforça a importância do Diretor Escolar e traz questionamentos sobre como reduzir a complexidade da Gestão Escolar e/ou melhorar o desempenho do Diretor.
Public sector managers and researchers have emphasized the importance of performance measurement. Nevertheless, few theoretical and empirical studies are found in Brazilian Judiciary Courts' literature. In order to empirically identify which variables (IT investments, own or outsourced human capital) are more relevant for improving productivity, the current research proposes a model using secondary data extracted from the Justiça em Números (Justice in Numbers) report, using structural equation modeling for the analysis. The results suggest that: (a) all variables are relevant for improving productivity in Brazilian Courts, confirming our first three theoretical hypotheses; and (b) own human capital has a greater impact on productivity than outsourced, confirming the fourth. For those who are responsible for reforms, this finding indicates that IT is not the most important investment. However a question remains: Seen as a cure for almost all problems in the public sector, is it possible to improve performance without hard IT investments? For future research there are some additional questions: Why is own human capital more relevant than outsourced? Which variables should be included in the model for improving the general significance? The answers can help improve Brazilian court productivity.
Resumo Com o grande número de empresas certificadas na norma ISO 9001, cresce a demanda por métodos de mensuração e evolução da Maturidade dos Sistemas de Gestão da Qualidade (SGQs). O presente trabalho teve por objetivo identificar quais são os construtos e os principais pontos de transição na Maturidade de SGQs por meio de uma investigação empírica utilizando análise fatorial e análise de cluster. A coleta de dados foi realizada a partir de pesquisa tipo survey com a participação de 179 empresas de diversos portes, segmentos e estados brasileiros que demonstram que, além daqueles construtos identificados na literatura, identificou-se a presença de um novo, a “Agilidade e Integração por Meio da Tecnologia da Informação”. Os construtos, bem como os pontos de transição identificados por análise de cluster podem ser úteis para gestores e pesquisadores interessados na temática de gestão e maturidade de processos, ainda que estes sistemas sejam tão difundidos na indústria. Especificamente, para profissionais, consultores e gerentes, este estudo pode ser útil, de modo a orientar seus esforços por melhores resultados de desempenho nas operações em suas empresas.
