In-Production Recycling of Active Materials from Lithium-Ion Battery Scraps

Abstract: Having a closer look at the details, recycling of scraps from the production of lithium-ion batteries is different from recycling of spent batteries. On the one hand it is less dangerous on the other hand pristine electrodes retain the original non-aged quality and thus the separation process is more difficult. Two different separation mechanisms, one mechanical and one based on the solvent N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, are examined in this work. The resulting separated coatings are directly re-applied on new electr… Show more

“…Direct reconditioning has the advantage of being a fast and less energy-consuming process, but it cannot directly adapt the cathode chemistry to new developments. For short life cycle phases or rejects from production (e.g., losses of battery cells during formation), direct reconditioning can be very attractive [80]. In order to realize a circular battery cell production, a number of technological and organizational prerequisites must be created:…”

“…[ 39 ] In the field of battery cell manufacturing process, this consists of sequential steps with many interdependencies. [ 40 ] A large quantity of data reflecting both the processes and equipment must be collected to guarantee the monitoring of the battery cells, ensuring required quality control, sustainability and cost efficiency. The work developed by Huber et al [ 41 ] goes toward this direction and presents a method for the automated classification of battery separator defects based on the data recorded by a machine vision system.…”
