In situ Alkylation of 4,4′‐Vinylenedipyridine for Inorganic‐Organic Iodides/Iodidomercurates

Abstract: Solvothermal reactions of HgI 2 , 4,4Ј-vinylenedipyridine, and HI in alcoholic solution (methanol, ethanol, or pentanol) gave rise to a family of organic-inorganic hybrid complexes, formulated as [C 14 H 16 N 2 ][I 4 ] 2-(1), [C 16 H 20 N 2 ][HgI 4 ] (2), and [C 22 H 32 N 2 ][HgI 4 ] 4 (3). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that all three compounds are discrete structures, including the inorganic anion [I 4 ] 2or [HgI 4 ] 2and an organic cation, where the resulting organic cations were gener-* Prof. Dr.… Show more

“…Compound 1 was prepared from the reaction of BiI 3 , HI, methanol and 1,2-dimethylimidazole under solvothermal conditions. As shown in Scheme 1, the protonated 1,2,3-trimethylimidazolium cation was generated via an N-methylation of 1,2-dimethylimidazole under acidic conditions (Cui et al, 2017). It is worth noting that hydroiodic acid in this synthetic process plays a significant role in the reaction and may react with methanol to form CH 3 I, which can be a reactant of the N-methylation (Scheme 1).…”
