In vitro evaluation of anthelmintic property of ethno-veterinary plant extracts against the liver fluke Fasciola gigantica

Abstract: The present study was envisaged to evaluate the efficacy of ethno-medicinal plant aqueous extracts such as Allium sativum, Lawsonia inermis, and Opuntia ficus indica in vitro in comparison with the chemotherapeutic agent, Oxyclozanide on Fasciola gigantica adults. The efficacy was evaluated by gross visual motility and mortality of F. gigantica with score index, light microscopic examination of carmine stained flukes and histopathology of treated flukes. Based on the in vitro trials conducted using above plant… Show more

“…These effects were mainly on motility and viability not the morphology (Eguale and Giday 2009;Bairagi et al 2011;Sarojini et al 2012). However, morphological changes of the cuticle of adult worm reported in this study were also detected using L. inermis aqueous extract against the liver fluke Fasciola gigantica where detachment of spines noticed (Jeyathilakan et al 2012).…”

“…The washed amphistomes were dehydrated with 70% alcohol three times and stained with acetic carmine dye overnight. The amphistomes were destained with 1% acid alcohol, washed in ammonia water, dehydrated with graded series of ethanol, cleared in xylene and permanently mounted with DPX [4,34]. The stained specimens were examined for abnormalities under stereo-zoom and light microscope and photographed.…”

“…The worms were fixed in 10% formaldehyde for 24 h, dehydrated with ascending series of ethanol and cleared with xylene. They were then embedded in paraffin, sectioned longitudinally and transversely at thickness of 5 μm, stained with haematoxylin and eosin [36] and examined for abnormalities under light microscope and photographed.…”

“…Struktur jaringan cacing trematoda dapat mengalami kerusakan akibat aktivitas antelmintik tumbuhan alam. Tegumen cacing trematoda F. gigantica mengalami kerusakan karena efek ekstrak minyak biji Azadirachtaindica (Jeyathilakan et al, 2010a), minyak esensial dari rumput kering Cymbopogan nardus (Graminae) (Jeyathilakan et al, 2010b), ekstrak alkohol Allium sativum, Piper longum, dan ekstrak Artocarpus lakoocha (Singh et al, 2007). Ekstrak A. sativum dan P. longum menyebabkan paralisis Gigantocotyle explanatum, cacing trematoda yang menginfeksi hati ruminansia (Singh et al, 2008).…”
