In vitro Evaluation of the Cytotoxicity of Different Root Canal Filling

Abstract: Objective:Aim of the present study was to evaluate the cytotoxicity of Real Seal 1 compared to other commercially available endodontic filling materials: Real Seal (SybronEndo, Orange, CA, USA) and Thermafil (Tulsa Dental, Tulsa, OK, USA).Material and Methods:Periodontal ligament cells from healthy patients were cultured. The eluate of Real Seal 1TM (RS1), Real Seal (RS) and Thermafil (TF) samples was used for the cells viability tests, both diluted (50%) or undiluted (100%). Incubation of the specimens was pe… Show more

“…Leakage of ZnO nanoparticles was suspected as an early source of cytotoxicity which became apparent after 24 h incubation of fourteen Gutta-percha materials commercially available prior to 1990 [ 28 ]. More recently though, Gambarini et al showed no cytotoxicity up to 72 h to periodontal ligament cells of newer root canal filling materials [ 29 ]. No study has addressed as yet the influence of Gutta-percha on stem cells differentiation.…”

“…Both materials, RealSeal 1 and Thermafil, were shown to be nontoxic. 60 Different studies compared the sealing ability of these two different carrier-based filling materials with different methods. With the use of fluid filtration system device, it has been shown that RealSeal 1 has significantly better sealing ability at 24 hours than Thermafil.…”
