In Vitro Susceptibilities of the Bacteroides fragilis Group Species: Change in Isolation Rates Significantly Affects Overall Susceptibility Data

Abstract: A comparison of antimicrobial susceptibility data of species of the Bacteroides fragilis group for 1989-1990 and 1998-1999 studies showed statistically significant increases or decreases in in vitro activity. Overall significant increases in resistance were noted for ampicillin-sulbactam and clindamycin, while significant decreases in resistance were noted for ertapenem and cefoxitin. Susceptibilities to piperacillin-tazobactam, imipenem, meropenem, and trovafloxacin remained virtually the same for the two stu… Show more

“…Traditionally, these agents were considered equally efficacious, a concept supported by data from older prospective trials. However, more recent in vitro data have demonstrated increasing resistance of B. fragilis and other anaerobic bacteria to clindamycin [66,67]. Although there have been no studies demonstrating that these changes in resistance have led to poorer clinical outcomes, this possibility remains a concern for some practitioners.…”

“…Porém, para outras infecções, como as de cólon, há maior chance de falha se a antibioticoterapia não for dirigida contra os germes isolados (3,11) . Com relação a bactérias anaeróbias, há maior e crescente resistência para a clindamicina, cefoxitina, piperacilina e quinolonas (1,11) . Nas infecções após cirurgias eletivas ou de emergência, a fl ora encontrada é geralmente mais resistente.…”

“…They are opportunistic pathogens commonly associated with peritonitis, septicemia, and wound infections (3,8). Although B. thetaiotaomicron is part of the indigenous microflora of the gastrointestinal tract, it may cause serious infections such as intra-abdominal sepsis and bacteremia (1,3,8). B. thetaiotaomicron is resistant to many antimicrobial agents; for example, it has been reported to be more resistant than B. fragilis to cephalosporins and clindamycin (1,9,10,12).…”

B. thetaiotaomicron is resistant to many antimicrobial agents; for example, it has been reported to be more resistant than B. fragilis to cephalosporins and clindamycin (1,9,10,12). Therefore, rapid and accurate identification of B. thetaiotaomicron in clinical specimens is important, and it may help physicians make rational, rapid choices with respect to antibiotic therapy.…”
